Speaking Client: Explaining Tech Stuff to Non-Tech People Pt. 1
Meetup: Tampa Bay (formerly St. Petersburg)
Featured Speaker: Jim True
Do you ever get the blank stares when you’re talking to your client about what you need from them? Do you constantly get pushback about Scope Creep, Requirements or Discovery or why it costs so much for a website project?
This series of talks will focus on Speaking to the Client in their language or creating analogies & metaphors they can understand and see the value behind. We’ll also have a ‘workshop’ portion where we’ll roleplay some client interaction and test your ‘speaking client’ abilities.
This first session will focus on:
• The Project Lifecycle [Discovery, Planning, Design, Development and Review]
• Discovery/Requirements Gathering (and why you should charge for it)
• Project Scope and Scope Creep (and why it costs the client for changing their scope)
Meetup Location:
Iron Yard St. Pete is in the Station House, a 4 story building at 260 1st Avenue S. You get to the Iron Yard by taking the gold/brass elevator facing 1st Avenue up to the 3rd Floor. The 2nd Floor also houses Station Houses’s CoWorking Space. Parking in St Pete is free after 6PM on the street in most areas; if you’re parking in a garage, use Muvico/Sundial parking as it’s cheaper.
Focus:
Our St Pete Meetups are more geared toward the professional, freelancer or agency owner. We talk more specifically about getting your skills up to run your business, using WordPress to take you to your next level, and beefing up your WordPress Design/Development skills. This is not a Beginner to WordPress Meetup; you should know how to manage themes and plugins and be building sites on a semi-regular basis.
Format:
Our Meetups in St Pete start at 6:00pm, the first 30 minutes are to give folks time to make it downtown, park, get through traffic, so they’ll be primarily for networking and free discussion. If we have a scheduled talk, we’ll always start right at 6:30pm and continue to 7:30pm or a bit beyond.
