According to WordPress:
Gutenberg is the project name of the new editing experience in WordPress.
The goal of Gutenberg is to simplify the creation of rich pages and posts in WordPress by replacing old custom HTML, CSS and shortcodes with native Blocks.

This will be released with WP 5.0 sometime in Q1 2018. Let’s talk about the current editor and what Gutenberg means for the future of WP and how it WILL disrupt current users and why WP is moving forward with this change. We will discuss the Pros and the Cons and walk through a site with a plugin that currently mimics the Gutenberg editor.
